Best time to travel to Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura feels like spring almost all year, so you can visit in any season. The key isn't so much the heat as the wind: here's the month-by-month climate and when to go depending on what you're after.

Thanks to its mild, stable climate, Fuerteventura is a year-round destination: pleasant temperatures, plenty of sun and very little rain. The big difference between one month and another isn't set by the thermometer but by the wind, which blows harder in summer and eases in spring and autumn.

The climate, month by month

Winter (December–February): mild and sunny, ideal for escaping the European cold; the odd cooler or windier day, but you can still live on the beach.
Spring (March–May): one of the best times: pleasant temperatures, less wind and fewer people.
Summer (June–September): moderate heat thanks to the trade winds, not stifling; it's the windiest season (the mecca of kite and windsurf) and the liveliest.
Autumn (October–November): the sea is at its warmest of the year and the wind eases; very good value.

The water and the wind

The sea stays at pleasant temperatures almost all year, a little cooler at the end of winter and warmer in autumn. The wind is part of the island's character: wonderful if you come to kite or windsurf, a little annoying if you just want to lie on the sand; in that case, look for sheltered beaches and coves.

When to go for your kind of trip

Calm beach with less wind: late spring and autumn.
Wind sports (kite, windsurf): summer, when it blows hard.
Escaping winter: any month from November to March, with sun almost guaranteed.

The star excursions —Isla de Lobos, the safari to the south or dolphin watching— run all year, so they depend less on the date than on booking ahead in the busiest months.

In short: there's no bad time for Fuerteventura. If wind bothers you, avoid the peak of summer for the beach; if you're after it, go in summer. And always bring high-factor sun protection: the sun here is strong even in winter.
