Off the north coast of Fuerteventura, between Corralejo and Lanzarote, Isla de Lobos is a small volcanic islet of barely six square kilometres within the Islote de Lobos Natural Park. With no cars, no hotels and almost no buildings, it feels like a place out of another time: turquoise beaches, dirt paths and a rare kind of silence. You visit it on a day trip and explore the whole island on foot.
How to get to Isla de Lobos
The usual way to get there is the ferry from the port of Corralejo, in the north of Fuerteventura. The crossing is short —about 15 minutes— and in season there are several departures a day; it's worth booking your return trip in advance, as places sell out during the busiest months.

Everything on Lobos is done on foot, along marked trails you must keep to so as not to damage the vegetation. These are the spots you shouldn't miss:
- El Puertito: a handful of houses and a natural lagoon of shallow, crystal-clear water, the best place for a swim.
- Playa de la Concha: a cove of pale sand and turquoise water, one of the most photographed sights in the Canary Islands.
- Montaña La Caldera: the island's small volcano; climbing to its crater (127 m) gives you the best view of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
- Martiño lighthouse: at the northern tip, at the end of the long trail; a peaceful walk with the sea on both sides.
The seabed around Lobos, protected and very clear, makes it an excellent spot for snorkelling. If you want to combine the crossing with a swim in the open ocean and time in the water, there are catamaran trips that sail around the islet before anchoring.

- Bring water and food: there are barely any services on Lobos, and it's best not to rely on the small restaurant at El Puertito.
- Sun protection, a hat and comfortable walking shoes: the island has no shade and the trails are dirt and stone.
- Leave no trace: it's a Natural Park. You can't leave the trails or camp, and you must take all your rubbish with you.
- Allow a margin for the return ferry: it's the only way off the island.
