Betancuria and the charming villages of Fuerteventura

Inland, Fuerteventura shows a different face: Betancuria, the first capital of the Canaries, white villages, windmills and mountain viewpoints. Here's what to see in the interior and how to tour it.

Updated 11 August 2026

Almost everyone comes to Fuerteventura for its beaches, but the interior holds its history and its soul. Among gentle mountains and palm-filled valleys appear quiet white villages, centuries-old churches and viewpoints with island-wide views. A day inland balances any sun-and-beach trip.

Betancuria, the first capital of the Canaries

Founded in the early 15th century, Betancuria was the first capital of the archipelago and remains the most charming village on the island: white houses, cobbled streets and the church of Santa María presiding over it all. It sits sheltered among mountains, a spot once chosen to guard against pirate attacks.

Viewpoints and statues along the way

The road up to Betancuria offers spectacular viewpoints over the island's interior, such as Morro Velosa. At the top of the pass, two large statues of the aboriginal kings Guise and Ayose watch over the valley: a classic photo stop.

Other charming villages

  • Pájara: known for its church and stone portal, one of the most singular in the Canaries.
  • La Oliva: with the Casa de los Coroneles, a grand manor house from the island's military history.
  • Antigua and its windmills: the mill and the farming traditions of the island's centre.
  • Vega de Río Palmas: a green haven of palm trees in the arid interior.
How to tour it: the interior is best enjoyed by car, stopping at villages and viewpoints at your own pace; a morning covers Betancuria and a couple of villages. If you don't drive, some island tours combine the south and the interior in a guided route. Bring water and something warm: it's cooler up in the mountains.

Betancuria and the inland villages show the most authentic Fuerteventura, the one from before tourism. Give them a morning between beach days: they're the perfect counterpoint to the dunes and the sea.
