Dolphin and whale watching in Fuerteventura

The south of Fuerteventura is one of the best areas in the Canary Islands to see dolphins and cetaceans. Here's where the trips leave from, which animals you see and how to enjoy them while respecting the sea.

Updated 11 August 2026

The waters of southern Fuerteventura, between Morro Jable and Jandía, are rich in marine life and one of the best spots in the archipelago for cetacean watching. Bottlenose and common dolphins are seen frequently, and with luck other passing species appear. It's an outing that captivates young and old alike.

Where the trips leave from

Most trips leave from the port of Morro Jable, in the south, the area with the most cetacean activity. There are also trips from Caleta de Fuste, on the east coast, closer to the hotels in the centre of the island. They run by catamaran or boat, often combined with time for a swim and snorkelling.

What you see and when

  • Bottlenose and common dolphins: the most usual, often coming to swim alongside the bow.
  • Other passing cetaceans: in Canary waters pilot whales and other species are seen from time to time; it depends on the season and luck.
  • Seabirds and, depending on the time of year, turtles: a trip out to sea gives more than you'd expect.

You can head out all year round —Fuerteventura's mild climate allows it— though the sea is usually calmer in the less windy months. No trip can guarantee a sighting: these are wild animals, but in this area the odds are high.

Doing it responsibly

Choose boats that respect the animals: keeping their distance, not chasing or surrounding them and switching off engines when they approach. In the Canaries, whale and dolphin watching is regulated; a good trip complies and explains it to you. That way the outing is still possible tomorrow.

If you want to make a day of it at sea, there are catamaran trips along the Jandía coast that combine sailing, a swim and the chance of seeing dolphins on the way.
